It's good to ask a few questions that help narrow the search for materials. You can ask if it's for a younger age group or college level. You can ask how much they need and what types of materials.
Sometimes we don't have a specific book on a subject, for instance, treason. What you can do is look at the wikipedia article on treason (U.S), find major cases, then look for those subjects in the catalog.
Another good use for wikipedia is looking at the bibliography for a subject. That way we can ILL a book or see if we have it.
