My father/grandfather/aunt was stationed here in 19??. Can I find any information or photos?
If the customer is a direct relative (parent, sibling, child) they can go to www.archives.gov and request the deceased service member's record. If the customer is a grandchild they will have to get one of the direct relatives to request the service records. This is the only way to get official records--there aren't any records available locally concerning medals, places of service, etc.
If the family member wants to get a feel for what the base was like in a certain year, the bound annual Leathernecks and Marine Corps Gazettes have good pictures and articles back to the 1940s.
Old boot camp pictures:
Parris Island. Recruit Photo 843-228-1555 or 843-228-1546--they need platoon #, month, and year.
San Diego. MCRD Museum Historical Society. For a fee, they have photos and platoon photos from 1939 to the present. 619-524-4426.
We can search the Globe with a good date estimate for a known article or photo but it takes time and the Globe microfiche doesn't have good quality photos. There are plans for the base to publish all the Globes back to 1944 digitally online but we haven't heard yet when they'll be online. When they do go online, they will be able to be keyword searched.
